Against Me!
Against Me! is a US punk rock band from Gainesville, Florida, formed in 1997 by singer and guitarist Laura Jane Grace. The group’s sound covers punk rock and folk punk, and its listed styles also include acoustic rock, alternative punk, country rock, cowpunk and pop punk.
James Bowman joins the band on lead guitar from 2001. The group’s lineup also includes Andrew Seward on bass and Atom Willard on drums, with former members including Kevin Mahon, Dustin Fridkin, Warren Oakes, George Rebelo, Jay Weinberg and Inge Johansson.
Recordings and labels
The band releases its first three studio albums on independent labels: Reinventing Axl Rose on No Idea Records, and As the Eternal Cowboy and Searching for a Former Clarity on Fat Wreck Chords. It then moves to Warner/Sire Records for New Wave, which reaches number 57 on the Billboard 200, and White Crosses follows on the same label in 2010.
In 2011, Against Me! launches its own label, Total Treble, to issue later recordings independently. The band’s sixth album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, appears independently and is followed by Shape Shift with Me in 2016.
EPs, singles and other releases
Against Me! has four well-known EPs: Crime as Forgiven by Against Me!, The Acoustic EP, The Disco Before the Breakdown and New Wave B-Sides. It also releases numerous singles, two live albums and demo versions of three studio albums.
Notable moments
In 2012, Laura Jane Grace publicly comes out as transgender. After a period of lineup changes and uncertainty about the band’s future, Transgender Dysphoria Blues is released in 2014 and receives critical acclaim.
