Adapt
Adapt is a German electronic music group associated with IDM, electronica, future bass and related styles. The act centres on Jonny Faggetter. The project has connections to Spanish electronic music through the artist Christian Del Moral, who is described as the figure behind the material associated with the name and whose early development comes from Ceuta, Spain.
Background and development
Christian Del Moral discovers techno at the age of nine and begins making electronic music from an early age. He grows up using cassettes and CDs, then starts experimenting with samples, remix sessions, an analogue mixer, CD players and a tape recorder at 14. He also plays guitar in several bands, works with samples, and spends summers in a garage producing music with other musicians. This period shapes his interest in collaboration and an instinctive approach to learning and performance.
Adapt emerges from a strong reaction to working with digital sequencers and from the music created with those new tools. The project develops an ambient approach built as an aural landscape, while also moving across IDM, hip hop, ambient and techno.
Performances and collaborations
In 2007, the competition Audiciones selects Adapt to perform live at Fundación Canal, a multidisciplinary auditorium for the performing arts in Madrid. At that point the project is based in Madrid. There, Del Moral meets Rec_Overflow, who asks him to publish the track Proyecto Tibet on the Plataforma-LTW EP Madrid. That release is made in collaboration with David Whitaker, a vocalist based in Tokyo, and it extends Adapt’s audience to Tokyo. Del Moral continues to collaborate with Whitaker.
Style and influences
Adapt’s music is described as ambient in character, with a focus on sound as atmosphere and landscape rather than genre boundaries. The project draws on personal meaning and character in its sound. Influences include Liam Howlett, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Arovane, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Boards of Canada.
Other activity
Del Moral is also studying sound at SAE in Madrid, with a focus on projects dealing with the nature of soundtracks.
