A Formal Horse

A Formal Horse is a progressive rock quartet from Southampton, active since 2014. The group is also associated with alternative rock and indie rock, alongside progressive rock, and its line-up includes lead vocalist Francesca Lewis.

Sound and influences

The band’s music is difficult to place in a single style, but it is marked by dense instrumental sections and a progressive approach. Its sound is compared with King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra, while Francesca Lewis’s vocals are associated with the surreal, whimsical side of 1970s Canterbury scene music.

The group also draws on a wide range of influences beyond rock, including Bartok and Bon Iver. That mix of references places A Formal Horse within British progressive rock while pointing to a broader and less conventional musical palette.
