There are gigs, and then there are gigs that feel like a giant summer garden party where everyone seems to have gatecrashed the best party of the year.
That was certainly the case when The Farm and Lightning Seeds rolled into Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club on Friday June 5th. Blessed with glorious Yorkshire sunshine and a crowd fuelled by nostalgia, indie anthems and suspiciously strong cocktails, this was one of those evenings that served up more aces than Centre Court and left the crowd feeling like they'd backed a winner.
Here are the five best things about that quality night in Ilkley:
1. The Farm proving "All Together Now" is still one of Britain's greatest football singalongs
Some songs age. Others become national institutions.
When The Farm launched into All Together Now, the entire venue seemed to become one giant choir. Arms went round shoulders, pints were raised aloft and complete strangers suddenly became temporary new soulmates for four glorious minutes.
It's impossible to hear that opening riff without smiling, and the Liverpool legends delivered it with the sort of warmth and energy that even Pete Sampras at his peak would've struggled to return.
2. The ice cream van selling Espresso Martinis
Forget your standard festival bars.
One of the biggest surprises of the evening was an ice cream van that had apparently decided frozen treats alone weren't enough and started serving Espresso Martinis.
Only in Britain could somebody stroll across a tennis club carrying what looked like a Mr Whippy and return five minutes later clutching a cocktail that could power a small village – enough juice to turn a straightforward deuce into match-point chaos.
3. Leeds United fans swapping Match Attax cards in the crowd
You never quite know what you're going to see at a gig.
Amongst the sea of bucket hats and vintage indie T-shirts were clusters of Leeds United supporters enthusiastically passing Match Attax football trading cards around like they were rare works of art.
With football fever already building ahead of a huge summer, the card-swapping became an unexpected sideshow. One minute people were discussing Lightning Seeds B-sides, the next they were debating whether a shiny midfielder was worth two defenders and a goalkeeper.
Pure Yorkshire.
4. People actually playing tennis on the courts next to the stage
Most concert venues have food stalls.
Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club had actual tennis.
While bands blasted out indie classics, players could be spotted casually knocking balls back and forth on the immaculate courts adjacent to the stage. It created one of the most surreal and charming sights you'll ever witness at a live show.
Imagine watching Lightning Seeds while simultaneously observing a perfectly respectable doubles rally unfold 30 yards away.
Wimbledon meets Glastonbury. Sort of.
5. Three Lions getting everyone ready for the summer ahead
The moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived when Lightning Seeds unleashed Three Lions.
With the World Cup just days away, the reaction was pure rapture. The chorus echoed around the venue with football fantasists already dreaming of what England might achieve once the tournament got underway.
For a few magical minutes, Ilkley felt like the unofficial launch party for England's World Cup campaign – Ian Broudie barely needing to sing a word.
Whether you're a football fan or not, hearing Three Lions on a warm Yorkshire evening with a field full of people belting out "It's coming home" remains one of the great live music experiences.
Throw in the stunning Ilkley scenery, some of the cleanest festival bogs in Britain and a wonderfully old-school indie crowd who know how to enjoy themselves without staring at their phones, and you've got the recipe for one of the most enjoyable nights of the summer.
