Former Bay City Rollers guitarist Neil Henderson has died aged 73, with tributes pouring in from the music world.

His death was announced by Middle of the Road, the Scottish band he later joined, who called him their "original lead guitarist, songwriter and friend." He had been ill for some time after suffering a stroke several years ago.

The Rollers years

Henderson played guitar in the Bay City Rollers from 1970 to 1972, featuring on Keep On Dancing — the band's first UK Top 10 hit. He left before Rollermania hit its peak, reportedly unhappy with the band's musical direction, according to his daughter Shona.

Life after the Rollers

Henderson went on to join fellow Scots Middle of the Road, known for the global hit Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, working as a guitarist and songwriter for years afterwards. He later built a home recording studio in the west of Scotland.

Tributes

Middle of the Road said his memory would "live on with all who had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him." Rollers guitarist Stuart Wood also paid tribute, sending condolences to Henderson's family.

He is survived by his daughters, Heather and Shona.

UK Festival Guides sends its condolences to Neil Henderson's family, friends, former bandmates and fans.
