Reading Festival 2026 runs from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August 2026 at Richfield Avenue, Reading. The festival operates two separate sets of rules: a site-wide banned list covering campsites and arena, and a much stricter arena policy that limits you to one A4-sized bag, bans alcohol outright, and only allows sealed soft drinks under 500ml. Everyone is searched on entry.

What's banned everywhere at Reading Festival 2026?

This list applies in the campsites and the arena. Bring any of it and you'll lose it at the gate — or lose your wristband.

  • All BBQs, including disposables, plus campfires, firewood, blowtorches, petrol burners and candles. Lighting a fire is an eviction offence.
  • Glass bottles, jars and containers over 100ml. Small items under that — perfume, nail varnish, compact mirrors — are fine. Decant everything else into plastic.
  • Illegal drugs, legal highs and nitrous oxide, including canisters and paraphernalia. Drug detection dogs are used on site.
  • Single-use vapes. Refillable vapes are still permitted.
  • Anything usable as a weapon, including penknives and catapults.
  • Drones and other flying devices, kites, sky lanterns, fireworks, flares, smoke bombs and lasers.
  • Aerosols over 250ml, spray cans and balloons.
  • Air horns, megaphones and large sound systems.
  • Face coverings, balaclavas and motorcycle helmets, plus unauthorised uniforms.
  • Generators (permitted in campervans only) and fitted gas cylinders (campervans only).
  • Skateboards, bicycles and scooters.
  • Professional camera equipment with a lens longer than 6 inches, and unauthorised recording gear.
  • Animals, except registered assistance dogs.
  • Items promoting cultural appropriation, and unauthorised traders' merchandise.
  • Excessive quantities of food or cigarettes — personal amounts only.

What can you take into the campsite?

There's no bag size limit on your first entry to the campsites, so this is where your trolley, sleeping bag and week's worth of snacks go. Everything is still subject to search, and the site-wide list above applies in full.

Cooking and stoves

Flat-based cooking stoves are allowed in the campsites for personal use only. Fuel is capped at a maximum of 1 litre per stove and a maximum of four gas canisters of 250ml or less. Anything with a fitted cylinder stays in the campervan fields. No BBQs of any kind, anywhere.

Speakers, gazebos and glass

Small handheld battery-powered speakers are permitted in the campsites if they're no bigger than 20cm x 20cm x 20cm, can't be linked to other speakers, and are kept at low volume. Gazebos are allowed in the general campsites, but stewards can ask you to move or remove one that's hogging space. And to repeat the big one: no glass over 100ml.

What about alcohol?

Alcohol is completely banned from the arena. In the campsites, drink for personal consumption is a normal part of the weekend, and the festival runs a Challenge 25 policy — carry valid ID (passport, driving licence, PASS card, MOD card or EU national ID) if you look under 25. What can you take into the arena?

The arena rules are far tighter, and this is where most people get caught out on Thursday night.

The A4 bag rule

One bag per person, maximum A4 size (8.27" x 11.69"). Organisers actively recommend bringing no bag at all to skip the search queues. If you'd rather not leave valuables in a tent, weekend ticket holders can pre-book a locker or pay £4 per item for secure storage.

Drinks and food

You can bring sealed water or soft drinks under 500ml, and empty reusable plastic or metal bottles of any size — fill them for free at water points across the arena. A full reusable bottle won't get through. Food is allowed for personal consumption only.

Will you actually be searched?

Yes. The official line is that you and your bag may be searched on entry to both the campsites and the arena, with enhanced searches, CCTV and detection dogs in use across the site.
