Zomby

Zomby is an electronic musician from London, England, who begins releasing music in 2007 after being influenced by the success of Skream’s “Midnight Request Line”. He is associated with dubstep, jungle and UK garage, and his work also draws on rave, grime and dub. His influences include jungle and Wiley’s eskibeat sound.

Releases and labels

Zomby releases music on Hyperdub, Dream Catalogue, Werk Discs, 4AD and XL Recordings. His first major release is the Zomby EP, issued in 2008 on Hyperdub. In the same year he releases his first full-length album, Where Were U in '92?, which takes its title from the opening line of M.I.A.’s “XR2” and pays tribute to the early 1990s scene. The record combines chiptune-influenced UK garage with faster rave-oriented breakbeat house sounds, and he uses period equipment such as the Akai S2000 sampler and Atari ST computer.

In 2009 he releases One Foot Ahead of the Other, a collection of tracks. In 2011 he signs to 4AD and releases Dedication, followed later that year by the Nothing EP. Dedication receives a four-star review in The Guardian and is described there as pensive and thought-provoking, with comparisons made to Keith Jarrett and the 1990s techno act Spooky. In 2013 he releases the double album With Love, and in 2015 he releases the double EP Let’s Jam!! on XL Recordings.
