Zen Mechanics is the progressive psytrance project of Wouter Thomassen, a Netherlands-based artist associated with Byron Bay. Thomassen works in electronic, progressive, psychedelic, psytrance and trance music.

Background

Thomassen comes from a musical family and begins DJing different forms of electronic music in 1994. He later becomes drawn to the goa trance and psychedelic trance scene after attending psychedelic squat parties in Amsterdam in the mid-1990s. Before focusing on production, he is active in the scene in several roles, including organising parties, DJing, and doing graphic design for flyers and album covers.

Production and releases

He starts music production in 2002. His first released track, Have a good one, appears on Beats & Pieces Records in 2004. After that, his output develops quickly, and his sound is described as a mix of high-tech trance with a funky and powerful style.

Labels

Zen Mechanics releases music on a range of labels, including Neurobiotic, Mindfunk, Proton, Sphere/Ajuca, Sirius, Beats & Pieces and ODD Records.
