Zeds Dead

Zeds Dead is an electronic music group from Toronto, Canada. The project begins in 2009 and is made up of Dylan Mamid, who also uses the name DC, and Zachary Rapp-Rovan, who also uses the name Hooks.

Background and style

DC and Hooks start making music together in 2004 under the name Mass Productions. Before adopting Zeds Dead, they release a hip-hop-influenced album called Fresh Beetz in 2007. Their music draws on dubstep, drum and bass, UK garage, house, electro house, hip-hop and glitch, and also moves across broader electronic styles. Their sound is associated with dubstep, brostep, electronic and grime, and they are known for combining different genres rather than staying within one.

Releases and career

In 2010, Zeds Dead release a remix of Blue Foundation’s “Eyes on Fire”, which becomes a major track in the dubstep scene and remains one of their best-known early releases. In 2016, they launch their own label, Deadbeats, and issue “Back Home” featuring Freddie Gibbs at the same time. Later that year, they release their debut album Northern Lights through Deadbeats and tour under that name.

Name

The name Zeds Dead comes from a line in Pulp Fiction spoken by Bruce Willis’ character: “Zeds dead baby”.
