Zayn Malik
Zayn Malik, also known as Zayn and born Zain Javadd Malik, is a British pop singer from Bradford, England. He is best known for his work as a member of One Direction and for his solo career.
Early life
He is born on 12 January 1993 in Bradford and grows up in East Bowling. He attends Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School. His family includes a British Pakistani father, Yaser, an English mother, Tricia Malik, and three sisters: Doniya, Waliyha and Safaa.
Malik is Muslim. He grows up listening to urban music, especially R&B and rap.
One Direction
His major breakthrough comes in 2010 when he appears as a solo contestant on the UK edition of X Factor. The judges suggest that he join with four other solo singers to form One Direction. The group goes on to achieve major international success. Malik leaves One Direction in March 2015 after five years with the band.
Solo career
In July 2015 he signs a solo recording deal with RCA. His solo work is associated with a desire to present himself on his own terms, and he cites artists such as Bruno Mars as a dream collaborator.
Personal life
In 2013 he announces his engagement to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards. The pair separate in 2015. He also speaks publicly about wanting to stop smoking cigarettes.
