Young Legionnaire

Young Legionnaire is a UK post-hardcore band from London, active from 2009 to 2016. It forms around Gordon Moakes and Paul Mullen, who begin the project after working together on Yourcodenameis:Milo’s “Print Is Dead” collaborations project. That project brings bands to the YCNI:Milo studio in Newcastle to write and record a song in a single day, and the track Moakes and Mullen make there, “Wait A Minute”, leads them to continue working together. The group is completed by drummer William Bowerman, with Denzel also listed as a member.

Background and members

Moakes is known for Bloc Party, while Mullen is associated with The Automatic and Yourcodenameis:Milo. Bowerman’s previous projects include Brontide, Iwasacubscout and La Roux. The band’s line-up later changes when Bowerman leaves and Dean Pearson replaces him.

Sound and releases

The group builds on a shared interest in riffs and noise, drawing on indie, post-hardcore, math rock, indie rock and experimental elements. Young Legionnaire releases its first 7-inch on Holy Roar in 2010. The band’s debut album, Crisis Works, is issued through Wichita Recordings.
