Winky D is the stage name of Zimbabwean artist Wallace Chirumiko, born in 1983 in Harare, Zimbabwe, and raised in Kabuzuma, a ghetto area of the city. He develops as a ragga and reggae-dancehall performer, and his lyrics often use local vernacular and ghetto slang rather than standard English.

Early life and beginnings

He collects ragga audio tapes and vinyl from an early age and performs for the first time at 16 at the Ghetto Lane Clashes, a setting for DJ battles featuring emerging and established selectors. His skill with vinyl scratching leads to the nickname Wicked Deejay, later shortened to Winky D. At these clashes, he competes against DJs linked with crews such as Alkebulani, New Generation, Shocking Vibes and Delta Force.

Style and themes

Winky D’s music follows the transition from local ragga into reggae-dancehall. His writing focuses on life in the ghetto, social justice, poverty and failed socio-economic systems. He is described as a social advocate through music, with songs that address everyday hardship and the experience of marginalised communities.

Artist identity

He is also associated with the names Gombwe, Gafa, dancehall igwe, ninja president and vigilance. His work is linked to a forceful, abrasive performance style that reflects the street-based culture from which his music emerges.
