William Michael Morgan
William Michael Morgan is an American contemporary country singer and songwriter from Vicksburg, Mississippi. He signs with Warner Bros. Records and Warner Music Nashville and is known for a traditional country style shaped by the work of Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard and George Jones. His early recording and publishing deals arrive before he turns 20, and his career develops around songs with a strong emphasis on melody, steel guitar and direct storytelling.
Early life and musical background
Morgan begins performing in the ninth grade, when he puts together a band with older musicians who share his interest in classic country. The group plays honky-tonks at weekends while he works a series of odd jobs during the week, including roofing and cashier work at a Piggly Wiggly. He starts travelling to Nashville to write songs at 16 and moves there permanently at 18, where he continues building contacts and developing as a writer and performer.
Recording career
Through connections with managers Joe Carter and Mike Taliaferro and producer Jimmy Ritchey, Morgan signs a record deal with Warner Music Nashville and a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell at 19. He later emerges as a Warner Bros. Records newcomer with a voice praised for its clarity and range. His debut single, “I Met a Girl,” introduces him to country audiences as a romantic, old-school-leaning singer, and it is co-produced by Scott Hendricks and Jimmy Ritchey. The song is co-written by Shane McAnally, Trevor Rosen and Sam Hunt.
Style and influences
Morgan’s music draws on traditional country sounds and themes. He describes himself as someone who prefers singing about love and good times, and his songs aim for the kind of plainspoken emotional directness found in the work of his heroes. Steel guitar and piano are central parts of the sound associated with his early material.
Debut album
His debut album is Vinyl, which includes the songs “I Met a Girl” and “Missing.” The album presents his blend of contemporary country and classic country influence, built around his vocal style and songwriting approach.
Recognition
Morgan earns recording and publishing deals before reaching 20 and is described as an award-winning young performer. His career is also associated with Grammy-nominated producer Scott Hendricks, who helps introduce him as a singer with a distinctive voice.
