William Doyle

William Doyle

William Doyle is a British electronic musician from Bournemouth, England. He is formerly known by the stage name East India Youth and has also performed under his own name. He is associated with Doyle & The Fourfathers, where he previously serves as lead singer.

Early work as East India Youth

Under the East India Youth name, Doyle releases his debut album, Total Strife Forever, through Stolen Recordings. The album draws on electronic and ambient influences and is shaped by artists including Tim Hecker, Brian Eno and Harold Budd. It takes its name from the East India Docks area in East London, where Doyle lives while writing the record, while the “Youth” element refers to a period of creative renewal and the shared flat he and others refer to as a “youth hostel”. His first EP is titled Hostel for the same reason.

Total Strife Forever receives nominations for the 2014 Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize Album of the Year and the Independent Album of the Year at the 2014 AIM Independent Music Awards. Doyle later signs to XL Recordings and releases his second album, Culture of Volume, with a title taken from a fragment of verse in Rick Holland’s poem “Monument”.

Solo releases and later work

In 2016, Doyle announces an indefinite break from the East India Youth project and continues recording under his own name. He releases the ambient album The Dream Derealised that year, then supports Sohn on tour in the US and in the UK and Europe in early 2017. He later releases a second instrumental solo album, Near Future Residence.
