White Mink

White Mink is a series of double-CD compilations built around electro swing and speakeasy jazz. The releases are compiled and mixed by label boss Nick Hollywood and bring together remastered and rediscovered material from rare original 78s alongside contemporary recordings influenced by 1920s and 1930s jazz-age sounds.

Releases and concept

The project pairs older jazz and swing recordings with modern dance-floor electro swing. In European versions, the compilation also includes rediscovered and remastered tracks from original 78rpm records. The idea is described as taking the sounds and styles of the 1920s and 1930s and bringing them into a 21st-century club context.

Club and festival activity

What begins as a compilation series develops into a club-night event, including Electro Swing club in London and White Mink events elsewhere. It then expands into festival-stage programming that features electro swing bands, DJs, cabaret and circus acts.

Recognition

The project is associated with comments from Time Out London, Mixmag and The Daily Telegraph, which refer to it as an early landmark for electro swing, describe it as part of the sound of 2011, and place it within a new jazz-age revival.
