Welcome the Howling Tones

Welcome the Howling Tones are a Farnborough group active since 2012. They play riff rock with heavy grooves and draw on blues, rock, metal and funk, combining soulful sounds, heavy rhythm and original material.

Formation and line-up

Rhythm guitarist Paul Waters starts the project after a period away from music, looking for a band to play blues on his beat-up Telecaster. He begins jamming regularly with drummer Lawrence Arnold, known here for an energetic style, and the pair work with a number of other musicians before the line-up settles.

After a number of sessions with Chris Gilday on bass, he switches to guitar and contributes lead parts with classic metal undertones. The band then looks for a new bassist and completes the line-up when Iain “Cat Scratch” Turner joins on bass and vocals.

Sound

Their music is described through heavy grooves, catchy riffs and a strong emphasis on tone. The band’s style also includes a funky edge in the bass and vocal parts, alongside blues, hard rock and metal influences.

Activity

Welcome the Howling Tones tour with GODSIZED in 2013 and perform material from across their set. Their name is associated with a stripped-back, riff-driven approach built from jam sessions and a mix of different rock-based influences.
