Weaves

Weaves is a Canadian indie pop band from Toronto. The group forms in 2013 and is active to the present. Its line-up consists of Jasmyn Burke on vocals, Morgan Waters on guitar, Spencer Cole on drums and Zach Bines on bass.

The band’s sound combines indie pop with raw garage rock, a mix that is described as “bubblegrunge”. Burke and Waters first meet in a bar and begin working on demo recordings based on song ideas Burke saves on her iPhone. Bines and Cole join in 2013, shortly before recording starts on the group’s debut EP.

Recordings and recognition

Weaves release a self-titled debut EP in 2014, followed by a self-titled full-length album in 2016. That album is shortlisted for Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards and for the 2017 Polaris Music Prize, and the song “Shithole” receives a SOCAN Songwriting Prize nomination. The band’s second album, Wide Open, follows in 2017.
