Wayne Hussey is a British rock musician and songwriter from Bristol, born Jerry Wayne Lovelock in 1958. He is associated with punk rock, post-punk, gothic rock and alternative rock, and is best known for his work with Dead or Alive, The Sisters of Mercy and The Mission.
Early life and influences
Hussey grows up in Bristol, where he is influenced by Marc Bolan and T. Rex. He takes inspiration from Bolan’s glam rock style and decides to pursue guitar and songwriting. He is brought up in the Mormon faith and later rebels against that background before moving to Liverpool in the late 1970s.
Career
In Liverpool, Hussey becomes involved with the scene around Eric’s nightclub and begins performing, including with Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls. His first major success comes when Pete Burns invites him to join Dead or Alive. After Burns moves towards studio work, Hussey leaves the group and joins The Sisters of Mercy, where he plays 12-string and 6-string guitars.
When The Sisters of Mercy begin to break up, Hussey and bassist Craig Adams form The Mission. The band also includes Mick Brown on drums and Simon Hinkler on guitars. Hussey later builds a solo career alongside his group work.
Other work
Hussey produces and performs on records by All About Eve. He also makes remixes for Cleopatra Records in the late 1990s and works on Brilliant Mistakes by the Greek band Flowers of Romance. He also appears live with Gary Numan and The Cure.
Personal life
Hussey lives in Brazil and supports Liverpool FC.
