Wax Tailor is the recording name of Jean-Christophe Le Saoût, a French producer from Vernon, France, born in 1975. He works in trip hop, hip hop, acid jazz, downtempo, electronica and electronic music.

Career

Before starting the Wax Tailor project, Jean-Christophe Le Saoût hosts a French radio show in Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Paris suburbs. In the 1990s he forms the French rap group La Formule. He later creates the label Lab'Oratoire in 1998 and uses it to release material by La Formule, break beat compilations and a collaboration with the Swedish group Looptroop.

He begins the Wax Tailor project in 2001 and first appears on a remix of Looptroop and La Formule's “Breathing Under Water”. His first EP, Lost The Way, appears in 2004 and includes contributions from Charlotte Savary, Marina Quaisse and Big Dada rapper Infinite Livez.

Albums and releases

Wax Tailor's debut album, Tales of the Forgotten Melodies, is released in 2005 and combines hip hop, downtempo and trip hop. His second album, Hope & Sorrow, follows in 2007.

Collaborators and style

Artists who appear alongside Wax Tailor include The Others, Ursula Rucker, Sharon Jones, Voice and A State Of Mind. His music makes heavy use of samples, and he describes its structure in cinematic terms, with each track treated as part of a larger sequence.

Recognition

Hope & Sorrow is nominated for Best Electronic Album at the 2008 Victoires de la Musique, the French music awards ceremony.
