Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan is the electronic project of Gordon Chapman-Fox, who grows up in Lancashire, England in the 1970s and begins making electronic music in 2003 under various names and labels. The project draws on hauntology, ambient and experimental ideas, and it is issued on the Castles in Space label.

Albums

The project releases three albums. Interim Report, March 1979 is the first and it reaches the Top 20 of Electronic Sound magazine’s albums of the year. People & Industry follows, and Districts, Roads, Open Space appears next, later reaching the top 20 of the UK vinyl album chart.

Context

Chapman-Fox’s work is shaped by his childhood in Lancashire in the 1970s, including memories of reenacting Star Wars to Jean-Michel Jarre while the space race enters its final phase. Before the release of Districts, Roads, Open Space, he appears on Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone hauntology special, where he discusses the legacy of the new towns and its influence on his music.
