Warm Digits

Warm Digits are a British electronic duo made up of Andrew Hodson and Steve Jefferis. The group is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Manchester, on either side of the Pennines, and has been active since 2010.

Style and approach

Their music combines metronomic rhythms, guitar noise, radiophonic electronics, dual-laptop electronics, no-wave guitar textures and free jazz drumming. The duo works in a semi-improvised way and draws on krautrock, experimental electronics and related styles.

Their influences include Neu!, My Bloody Valentine, Emeralds, cosmic disco, Eno, Giorgio Moroder and Holy Fuck.

Releases and collaboration

Warm Digits first bring their improvisations together into instrumental songs for their debut album Keep Warm… with the Warm Digits, released on Distraction Records.

Before that, they work on remixes for artists including UNKLE and Maxïmo Park. David Brewis of Field Music contributes bass as a guest on their album.

Live work

The group builds a live show around sensory overload, using colour-coded structural films and live-feed video cameras alongside the performance. They tour in support of acts including Field Music, Goblin, Modeselektor and Barbara Morgenstern, and they also appear on a BBC 6Music session invited by Marc Riley.

Members’ wider work

Both musicians work in experimental music scenes in Newcastle and Manchester from the early 2000s. Andrew Hodson moves from found-sound collage to the laptop-based work of The Matinee Orchestra, releasing an album on Arable in 2006. He also runs Seed Studios in Trafford and works as a producer, recording and playing drums for Paul Smith’s solo album Margins and producing Cath and Phil Tyler’s Dumb Supper.

Steve Jefferis releases singles and albums of glitchy, melodic electronica as Cathode on Expanding Records, Static Caravan and Distraction Records.
