Volumes
Volumes are a Los Angeles, United States-based djent and metalcore group formed in 2009. Their music is also described as progressive metal, and the band has been associated with groove metal and math metal. They are active from 2009 to the present and are linked with 91367 Records.
Formation and early line-up
The band begins with guitarists Diego Farias and Daniel Braunstein writing music together in Los Angeles. Vocalists Michael Barr and Gus Farias join them, with Raad Soudani on bass and Chris Khoury on drums. Braunstein later leaves because of university commitments and is replaced by Daniel Schwartz. Since late 2011, the group has had only one guitarist.
Releases and label history
Volumes sign with Mediaskare Records and Outerloop Management in 2010 and release their debut EP, The Concept of Dreaming, later that year. Their first full-length album, Via, follows in 2011 and reaches number one on the iTunes Rock and Metal charts. Their second full-length, No Sleep, arrives in 2014 and also reaches number one on the iTunes Rock and Metal charts. The song “Vahle” appears on that record.
In 2016 the band moves away from Mediaskare and signs with Fearless Records. They release the single “Feels Good” and reissue Via and No Sleep through their own label, 91367 Records. Their later releases include “On Her Mind”, a 2017 single featuring rapper Pouya, and the album Different Animals. They also release the EP Coming Clean in 2019, which is recorded in Southern California at Butter Studios in Venice, West Alley Recording Studios, and Farias Productions.
Line-up changes and collaborators
Chris Khoury leaves the group in 2011, with Daniel Schwartz taking over drums for a period before Nick Ursich becomes the permanent drummer in early 2012. Michael Barr later leaves in 2015, and Myke Terry, formerly of Bury Your Dead, replaces him. Joe Buras of Born of Osiris handles touring vocals after Barr’s departure. The band also records with additional production input from Kyle Black and Max Schad on Coming Clean.
Tours and other activity
Volumes tour North America in 2011 with Arsonists Get All the Girls, The Contortionist and Structures. They tour Europe in 2012 with Veil of Maya, Betraying the Martyrs and Vildhjarta, then tour the United States in 2013 with Of Mice & Men, Woe, Is Me, The Devil Wears Prada, Texas in July and Capture the Crown. They also support Crown the Empire on the Welcome to the Resistance tour in 2014 and play Vans Warped Tour that summer. During the New Reign tour with Born of Osiris, they premiere the song “Left For Dead” live.
