Voka Gentle

Voka Gentle is a London-based indie group active since 2014. The line-up comprises twins Ellie Mason and Imogen Mason with William J. Stokes. The group was formerly known as Wovoka Gentle.

Style and approach

The band works from folk and acoustic foundations, drawing on the structure and soundscape of traditional folk songs while developing a more experimental songwriting style. Their live performances also incorporate performance art, installations and projected visuals.

Early work and collaborations

Voka Gentle forms in 2014 and soon writes and performs the score for A Table, a production by the avant-garde physical theatre company Stasis directed by Aniela Piasecka. The group also provides music for the world premiere of Alex Howarth’s stage adaptation of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape at London’s Bridewell Theatre.

EPs

The band releases its first EP, Voka Gentle (Yellow), on Yucatan Records in 2015 and marks it with a sold-out show at Cecil Sharp House in London. A second EP, Voka Gentle (Blue), follows later that year with a sold-out performance at Electrowerkz. Their third EP, Voka Gentle (Red), is produced by Gareth Jones, whose credits include Grizzly Bear, Depeche Mode and Interpol.
