Vive la Void

Vive la Void is a Portland-based electronic and experimental group centred on Sanae Yamada, who is also a co-founder and keyboard player of Moon Duo. Yamada writes and records the project’s material herself, and the act’s self-titled debut album grows out of work she develops during periods when Moon Duo is not touring or recording.

Music and style

The project’s songs emerge from layered synthesizer experiments and move between dense, shifting atmospheres. Its sound combines ethereal textures, low-end pulse and crackling electronic detail, with Yamada’s vocals playing a central role. The lyrics also reflect ideas about the changing nature of memory and perception.

Background

The debut Vive la Void takes shape over roughly two years and consists of seven songs. It develops from late-night basement recording sessions and presents Yamada’s solo work away from Moon Duo, while retaining an experimental electronic approach linked to synthpop and psychedelic music.
