Vicious Circle

Vicious Circle is a death metal and thrash metal group from New Jersey, United States. The band is active from 1989 to the present and is identified as a US extreme metal act.

Style and releases

The group’s recorded output includes a 1989 demo, Mutated Form in 1990, Fist of God in 1992, the full-length Cryptic Void in 1993, a 1994 demo, the Live Long And Suffer EP in 1997, the compilation Reflections of a Past Light in 2000, the full-length The Art of Agony in 2004, and the Lifelong Suicide demo in 2007.

Line-up and activity

In the early period, original drummer Michael is replaced in 1984 by Perth-born drummer Russel Hopkinson. By April 1986, David Ross replaces Hopkinson on drums, and Keith Chatham, formerly of Death Sentence, joins on bass so that Alby Brovedani can focus on rhythm guitar. Before the recording of Reflections, Chatham has left and Brovedani returns to bass. At the end of 1986, James Lynch, formerly of Children of Sorrow, replaces Ross on drums.

Associated releases and touring

The band’s earliest recorded tracks, “Blood Race” and “Police Brutality,” appear on the compilation Eat Your Head in 1984, and “Police Brutality” also appears on the P.E.A.C.E. compilation LP. The first EP, Search For Solution, is issued on Reactor in 1984 and sells its full initial run. The debut album, The Price of Progress, follows in 1985, with a UK licensing deal on Children of the Revolution. In 1986, the band issues a split album with Youth Brigade and the single “A Nightmare So Quick/Viewing Time,” then tours the United States for three months and plays with Final Conflict, Agnostic Front, GBH, MDC, Life Sentence, Attitude Adjustment and Crucifucks. Later releases include the Hope and Wait 12-inch EP in 1987 and Into The Void on Waterfont.

Later activity

After breaking up in 1990, Lindsay and Ruminicik form the skatecore band Rue Morgue with Danny, formerly of Depression. By 1994 or 1995, Lindsay and Ruminicik revive Vicious Circle, and the band returns with the Fixated EP in March 1996, followed by Internal Headstrength in 1997 and Perfect World Disaster on Resist Records in 1999.
