Venetian Snares

Venetian Snares is the recording name of Aaron Funk, a producer from Winnipeg, Canada, born in 1975. He works in electronic music and is associated with acid techno, breakcore, drill and bass, gabber and IDM, as well as wider experimental and electronica contexts.

Style and approach

Funk is known for using unusual time signatures and for very fast, irregular rhythms. His music is often described as intense and unpredictable, with a style that stands out within experimental electronic music.

Early releases and Planet Mu

His first release is the EP Greg Hates Car Culture, issued on the History Of The Future label. He then releases Salt on Zhark and Fuck Canada // Fuck America with Stunt Rock on CLFST. After hearing Greg Hates Car Culture, Mike Paradinas, also known as µ-Ziq, signs Funk to Planet Mu.

Before these label releases, Funk self-releases material on cassette tape as early as 1992. The first Venetian Snares album on Planet Mu is Making Orange Things, a collaboration with Speedranch, and it appears in early 2001. Several more Planet Mu releases follow in quick succession, with five further releases appearing before the end of 2002.

Other labels and aliases

Funk continues to record for a range of labels, including Hymen, Addict and Sublight Records. He also records under several other names, including snares, Snares Man!, BeeSnares, Ventriloquist Snakes, Puff, Last Step and Senetian Vnares.
