Vaudou Game

Vaudou Game is a Togolese afro-funk and soul group based in Lomé, France. The project is led by Peter Solo, who performs lead vocals and guitar and gives the group its name. The band draws on the musical and ritual traditions of vaudou culture from Togo and Benin, combining them with an energetic 1970s-style Afro-funk sound.

Style and background

The group’s approach is rooted in the idea of bringing characteristic vaudou vocal lines, used in honour of divinities, into a modern funk framework. Its sound also connects with African and Afro-American traditions, including blues, funk and rhythm and blues, with references to artists such as James Brown, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.

Members

Peter Solo leads the group on vocals and guitar. Other members listed are Vicente Fritis on keyboards and backing vocals, Jérôme Bartolome on saxophone, percussions and backing vocals, Guilhem Parguel on trombone, percussions and backing vocals, Simon Bacroix on bass and backing vocals, Hafid Zouaoui on drums, and Stéphane Pauze as sound engineer.

Musical identity
