Vanessa Carlton

Vanessa Carlton is an American singer-songwriter, pianist and actress from Milford, Pennsylvania. Born in 1980, she is known for pop, pop rock, rock and singer-songwriter material built around piano-led arrangements.

Early life and background

She grows up in a musical family: her father, Edmund “Ed” Carlton, works as a private jet pilot, and her mother, Heidi Lee, is a pianist and school music teacher who teaches her piano from an early age. She is the first of three children, with a sister, Gwen, and a brother, Edmund. Her mother’s family comes from Queens, New York, and her maternal grandfather’s surname is originally Liberman before being changed to Lee after World War II; Carlton later names an album and her record label after him.

As a child she shows an early interest in music, begins playing piano by ear after hearing melodies such as “It’s a Small World”, and starts writing songs on the piano. She also trains in ballet, studies under Gelsey Kirkland and Madame Nenette Charisse in New York City, and enrols at the School of American Ballet in 1994. She graduates from the school in 1998. During this period she attends school alongside ballet training, is friends with Julia Stiles, and later works in hospitality while playing small venues. She signs her first publishing deal in her late teens.

Recording career

While still a teenager, she records demo material. Around this time she develops the piano motif that later becomes part of “A Thousand Miles”, a song she completes after being challenged to finish it and which is inspired by an unnamed Juilliard School student she has a crush on. Her father circulates demo recordings to clients, one of which reaches Ahmet Ertegun, who becomes an early mentor.

In 2001 she meets songwriter and producer Peter Zizzo through the New York Songwriters Circle and records demo material with him. She is later introduced to Jimmy Iovine, who signs her to A&M Records. After hearing her demo of “A Thousand Miles”, Ron Fair oversees the track’s recording and production. She first works on an unreleased album project called Rinse; several songs from those sessions are later reworked for her debut album, Be Not Nobody.

“A Thousand Miles” becomes a major commercial success, spending 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning three Grammy nominations. Be Not Nobody is released in 2002, reaches number five on the Billboard 200 and sells over one million copies worldwide. The album also includes the singles “Ordinary Day” and “Pretty Baby”. In 2002 and 2003 she tours extensively, opening for the Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind as well as headlining her own tour. She also contributes backing vocals to Counting Crows’ version of “Big Yellow Taxi”.

Her second album, Harmonium, is released in 2004, debuts at number 33 on the Billboard 200 and includes the single “White Houses”, which reaches number 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. The video for the song is edited and later banned by MTV because of lyrical references to sexual experience. During this period she also contributes to other artists’ recordings. She leaves A&M Records in 2005, citing creative differences and label pressure.

In 2007 she releases Heroes & Thieves on Murder Inc Records before later ending that association. The album’s lead single, “Nolita Fairytale”, charts on Billboard’s Adult Top 40. She then releases Rabbits on the Run in 2011 on Razor & Tie; it is recorded at Real World Studios in England, produced by Steve Osborne, and draws on literature and scientific ideas. She also issues the EP Hear the Bells in 2011.

Liberman is completed in 2014 and released in 2015 on Dine Alone Records after a delay during her pregnancy. The album is preceded by singles including “Blue Pool” and “Willows” and receives generally positive reviews. A live album, Liberman Live, follows in 2016. From 2017 onwards she releases independent recordings, including live albums and a run of cover songs in 2018 that later appear as a vinyl compilation.

Her sixth studio album, Love Is an Art, is released in 2020 and is co-written with Tristen Gaspadarek. In 2023 a viral video of a piano-playing robot puppet performing “A Thousand Miles” circulates online. In 2024 she and her husband John J. McCauley III compose the score for the film Wish You Were Here, directed by Julia Stiles and released in 2025. In 2025 she is ranked by Billboard among the best female artists of the 21st century. She releases the single “Animal” in 2025, produced by Dave Fridmann, and follows it with Veils in 2026 through her label Liberman Records. She also appears as a surprise performer at Coachella in the same month.

Stage work

Outside recording, she makes her Broadway debut in 2019 in a leading role in the Carole King musical Beautiful, playing the lead in a limited engagement.
