Upbeat

Upbeat is a group from Carpinteria, United States, active from 1985 to the present, with Grant Cox and Nathan Dawdell as members. It works in drum'n'bass and liquid funk.

The name is also used by Michel Lloyd, who moves from Quebec City to Montreal at the turn of the millennium and begins making electronic music under the alias Upbeat in 2006. His work draws on visual art, the atmosphere of Montreal and the city’s wider sound environment. After becoming involved with Montreal’s electronica scene in the following year, he spends time around DJs whose influence helps him refine the sound of his compositions.

Under this name, his music develops towards minimal techno, with textured, beat-led tracks built around hooks. He has around a hundred pieces in his repertoire and performs live as part of his approach to electronic music.

His releases include Idylle, and he also appears on Electronic Washroom Vol. 2 and Insectorama.005.
