Unbelievable Truth
Unbelievable Truth are an indie rock band from Oxford, England, active from 1993 to 2000, and later reform in 2024. The group is made up of Andy Yorke, Nigel Powell, Jason Moulster and Jim Crosskey. Their name comes from Hal Hartley’s film The Unbelievable Truth.
Early releases
The band’s first single, Building, appears in February 1997 on Shifty Disco, an Oxford label. Their debut album, Almost Here, is released in 1998 on Virgin Records. After that release, they are dropped by Virgin.
Second album and split
Sorrythankyou, the band’s second album, follows in 2000 on Shifty Disco. It is the label’s first vinyl pressing. The band splits in 2000 after Andy Yorke decides to leave.
Later activity
In 2001, Unbelievable Truth issue Misc. Music, a self-published double album. One disc collects B-sides and unreleased tracks, while the other contains a live recording of their farewell show at the Zodiac in Oxford on 16 September 2000. The band returns for a one-off Oxford gig in 2005 in support of tsunami victims. Andy Yorke also releases a solo album, Simple, in 2008. After a couple of shows in 2023 marking the 25th anniversary of Almost Here, the band reforms in 2024. In March 2025, they release the EP Citizens Band, their first new material in more than 20 years.
