Ty Dolla $ign is the stage name of Tyrone Griffin, a singer, rapper and producer from Los Angeles, United States. His work spans contemporary R&B, hip hop and pop rap, and he is also associated with R&B. He is signed to Taylor Gang Records and Atlantic Records.
Early life and musical background
He is the son of a musician from Lakeside, and he begins his career by learning bass guitar. He later learns drums, guitar, keyboard and the MPC, building a multi-instrumental approach to production and performance.
Early releases and breakthrough
Before his solo breakthrough, he signs a record deal with Venus Brown and Buddah Brown Entertainment with his partner Kory, and they release Raw & Bangin Mixtape Vol 2. That deal later falls through. He then meets Los Angeles rapper YG, and his first major recognition comes from writing and producing YG’s “Toot It and Boot It”, with both artists linked to the Pushaz Ink collective.
In 2011 he releases his first single, “All Star”, featuring Joe Moses and produced by Fuego. His track “My Cabana” appears in Complex’s list of the Best 50 Songs of 2012 at number 23.
Mixtapes, EPs and label activity
He signs to Atlantic Records in 2012. That same year he releases the Beach House mixtape, followed by Beach House 2 in 2013. The second mixtape includes guest appearances from Too $hort, Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J and Kirko Bangz, among others, and is supported by the single “Irie” featuring Wiz Khalifa. The first Beach House release is supported by “My Cabana” featuring Young Jeezy.
He later reveals his debut extended play, Beach House EP, which arrives in 2014. The EP includes guest appearances from Casey Veggies, Wiz Khalifa, Twista, Jay Rock, Trey Songz, French Montana and Fredo Santana, and it features the single “Paranoid” with B.o.B. Another single from the EP is “Or Nah” featuring Wiz Khalifa and DJ Mustard.
Collaborations and later work
Ty Dolla $ign works repeatedly with Kanye West, including on the Wyoming Sessions projects Ye and Kids See Ghosts. He later records with West under the name ¥$, first attached to a planned collaboration project before the name is used for the artist credit on the album VULTURES 1. The project is later followed by VULTURES 2. He is also associated with Taylor Gang, MihTy, D.R.U.G.$., Jack Sample Pros and TGOD Mafia.
