Twin Falls

Twin Falls is a group from the United Kingdom that begins as a Somerset, England project and is active from 2009 to the present. The act is led by Luke Stidson, who previously runs the indie label Exercise1, which releases debut singles by Twin Thousands and Jeremy Warmsley and a compilation titled 50minutes featuring Daniel Johnston and MC Lars.

Formation and recording

After Exercise1 ends, Stidson returns to writing and recording songs at home. He names the project Twin Falls and uses close friends and family members to play instruments he cannot handle himself. The early releases are two self-issued EPs over the space of a year.

The first full-length album, Slow Numb, is recorded over a year in living rooms, sheds, garages and barns in Somerset. The album draws on alt.country, indie, folk and country sounds, with references in the music to Neil Young, Grandaddy and Sparklehorse, alongside fuzz guitar and synth-pop textures. A track titled “Janie I Will Only Let You down” is included on a compilation curated by John Parish.

Reception and radio play

Twin Falls receives positive attention from online music publications, with one review rating the project four out of five and another describing it as essential listening and giving it top marks. The project also gains radio support from Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music, and Lamacq interviews Stidson on air, describing Twin Falls as “lo-fi romantics”.
