Tru Thoughts is an independent record label based in Brighton. It is founded in 1999 by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas and focuses on nu-jazz, funk, soul and downtempo, with an experimental and alternative reputation. The label brings together artists from different countries and releases independent music with an emphasis on originality, soul, creativity and strong melodies.
History and profile
Tru Thoughts is set up to put music first, with the business arranged around the records rather than the other way round. The name comes from combining the word “Thoughts” with inspiration from Pete Rock’s Tru Master 12-inch release. The label is associated with the independent music scene in Brighton and continues to be recognised in the industry.
Recognition
In 2005, Tru Thoughts wins the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award for label of the year.
Associated artists and sub-labels
The label roster includes Quantic, Alice Russell and TM Juke. It also operates a hip hop imprint called Zebra Traffic, which releases music by Rup and Dirty Diggers. The label’s founder also expresses interest in signing Immortal Technique.
Philosophy
Tru Thoughts presents itself as a home for independent artists, with a focus on helping them develop and release music without the scale pressures faced by major labels. It also supports artists making music across a wide range of related styles.
