tricot
tricot (トリコ, toriko) is a Japanese math-rock band from Kyoto, formed in 2010. The group’s line-up centres on Ikkyu Nakajima on vocals and guitar, Motoko “Motifour” Kida on guitar and vocals, Hiromi “Hirohiro” Sagane on bass and vocals, and Yuusuke Yoshida on drums, who joins in 2017. Earlier, the band also includes drummer Kazutaka Komaki, who leaves in 2014. For live dates after that, the group uses replacement drummers including Yuumi of FLiP, Miyoko Yamaguchi of detroit7 and BimBamBoom.
Style and sound
The band is known for a mix of fragile but dynamic vocal parts, abrupt and intricate song transitions, dreamy post-rock-like melodies and complex rhythms associated with math rock. Their sound places them between math rock and alternative rock, with a strong emphasis on instrumental interplay and changing textures.
Releases and live activity
Following a series of well-received singles, EPs and a mini-album, tricot build a profile through extensive touring and festival appearances. Their debut full-length album, T H E, follows those early releases and support touring. In 2014, they tour across around five countries on the “What’s Ochansensu-Su!? tricot Asia Tour”.
By 2012 and 2013, they appear at a number of major Japanese festivals, including ARABAKI ROCK FEST, FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL, ROCK IN JAPAN, RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL, MONSTER BASH, WILD BUNCH FEST and SWEET LOVE SHOWER. They also appear at four large festivals in Europe in 2014.
