Trentemøller

Trentemøller is the stage name of Anders Trentemøller, an electronic musician from Vordingborg, Denmark, who is associated with alternative rock, ambient, electronic, shoegaze, minimal and techno. He begins performing in 1997 on the Copenhagen club circuit and in live settings, and later works under several names, including Businessman and Run Jeremy, as well as in groups such as Trigbag, Action Men and Run Jeremy Band.

Early work and first releases

In 1997, he and DJ T.O.M. form Trigbag, described as Denmark’s first live-house act, and the project plays concerts internationally. Trigbag’s single “Showtime” receives support from DJs including Alex Gopher, Laurent Garnier and Etienne de Crécy before the group ends in 2000. After a period away from recording, Trentemøller returns in 2003 on Naked Music with the Trentemøller EP, which includes “Le Champagne” and “Work in Progress”.

Recognition and labels

He wins the Danish DJ Awards’ “Up Front Release of the Year” in 2004 for “Le Champagne”. In February 2005, Steve Bug releases the Physical Fraction EP on Audiomatique, and this is followed by releases on Poker Flat, including Polar Shift, Sunstroke and the Nam Nam EP. His debut album, The Last Resort, appears on Poker Flat in 2006 and receives critical attention, with German magazine Groove and French magazine Trax both voting it Record of the Year. His BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix is also voted Essential Mix of the Year by listeners in 2006.

Remixes and collaborations

Trentemøller becomes a sought-after remixer, working on tracks by Martinez, Sharon Phillips, Röyksopp, The Knife, the Pet Shop Boys and Moby. His remix of Moby’s “Go” reaches number 38 on the Australian ARIA Club chart in October 2006. He also remixes Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” in 2006 under the alias Businessman, issuing it as “Dubby Games”.

With DJ Buda, he releases a white-label remix of Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker” under the name Run Jeremy, and the pair also make “Gamma” and “25 Timer”. He also works with DJ Buda and DJ T.O.M. on “Bless You” for the Lulu Rouge album of the same name.

Albums and later work

After The Last Resort, he releases The Trentemøller Chronicles in 2007, Into the Great Wide Yonder in 2010, Live in Copenhagen and Lost in 2013, Lost Reworks in 2014, Fixion in 2016, Obverse in 2019, Memoria in 2022 and Dreamweaver in 2024. Into the Great Wide Yonder appears on his In My Room label and moves further away from the dancefloor, while Lost is more song-based and includes guest appearances from Jana Hunter, Marie Fisker and the indie rock group Low.

Among his best-known tracks are “Moan”, credited to Trentemøller featuring Ane Trolle, which becomes a hit in Denmark and reaches the top 30 in Belgium, as well as “Always Something Better”, “African People”, “Miss You”, and the remixes listed above. His catalogue also includes releases such as Beta Boy, Kink, Serenetti, Rykketid and Rauta EP.
