Trash

Trash is a New Zealand punk and avant-garde group from Dunedin, associated with a loose, heavy guitar sound that also draws on pop elements. The group forms as part of the “no future” stable and is described as helping to create an early version of what is called Industrialsamplecoregouchbeat, with drill and bass elements appearing ahead of their time. Its line-up includes Bruce Blucher on vocals, Paul Cahill, Robbie Yeats and André Richardson. Blucher is also known for work with the Alpaca Brothers, Cyclops and Pointy Little Stick; Cahill also plays with the Alpaca Brothers; Yeats has links to the Renderers, Dead C and the Verlaines; and Richardson is associated with Doramaar and Cyclops.

Recording history

Trash releases a small run of singles and albums in the early 1990s. Among the records noted are On and On with Lou Reed from 1992, New World of Sound and Gritt and Butts, also from 1992, and Turbulence Not Gate from 1994. The group’s sound is characterised by piledriving riffs, with Blucher’s vocals sometimes compared to Ian Curtis of Joy Division.
