Toundra

Toundra is an instrumental group from Madrid, Spain, active since 2007. It is a Spanish post-rock and atmospheric sludge metal band whose sound also fits post-metal, post-hardcore and rock.

Formation and style

The band forms after the break-up of Nacen De Las Cenizas, carrying forward some of the momentum that group builds among hardcore listeners in Spain and abroad. Toundra chooses to work without vocals, using guitars, bass and drums to carry the full musical structure. Its line-up is a quartet in its early releases.

Early recordings and debut album

After releasing demos, the band issues its self-titled debut album. The record is made at Sandman Studios with Carlos Santos, and it is produced at Studio Tailor Maid in Sweden by Peter in the Betou, who works with acts including Arch Enemy and Opeth. The production is noted for helping the band shape its contrasting dynamics, with wide shifts between intensity, quiet passages and dense instrumental development.

Musical character and comparisons

Toundra’s music is associated with long-form instrumental structures and a strong sense of atmosphere. Its sound is compared with groups such as Isis, Neurosis and Pelican, as well as Mogwai and Tool, while remaining distinct from those influences.
