Tony Christie

Tony Christie, also known as Anthony Fitzgerald, is a singer from Conisbrough in the United Kingdom. Born in 1943, he begins his musical career in 1960 as part of a duo called the Grant Brothers, and until 1969 he fronts bands rather than recording under his own name.

Career

In 1969, Christie signs with MCA Records. He becomes known for songs including Amarillo and I Did What I Did for Maria, and sells more than 10 million records in the 1970s. His work is associated with traditional pop and schlager.

During the 1980s, his commercial profile slows as popular tastes change, but he receives Die Golden Europa from German radio for his showmanship. In the 1990s, he records further hits including Sweet September and Walk like a Panther, the latter written by Jarvis Cocker.

Later recognition

Christie reaches a wider younger audience when Peter Kay brings his music back into prominence through (Is This the Way To) Amarillo and Avenues and Alleyways. He also records (Is This the Way To) The World Cup, reflecting his continued connection with football themes.
