Tongues

Tongues is a name used by several different acts, including a Denmark-based blackened death metal project, a Seattle garage punk act, a Chicago band, and a hardcore band from Milan. The available details most fully describe the Danish metal group, which debuts in 2014 with Thelésis Ignis on I, Voidhanger Records.

Danish blackened death metal project

The Danish Tongues issue Thelésis Ignis as a 35-minute EP in 2014. It receives attention in underground metal circles, and the group then keeps a low profile while working for several years on a second release. That follow-up, Hreilia, continues the band’s blend of black, death and doom metal, with fast riffs, melodic passages and dark atmospheres.

Hreilia carries an esoteric, bleak tone, and its cover painting is by vocalist A. Lovmand. The title comes from a dream, and drummer and lyricist C. Qvortrup explains that it has a spiritual meaning linked to disappointment and nightmare imagery. The record also includes the tracks “Grove Of Mithridate” and “Theophagous Wounds Of Earth”, which show the band’s mix of aggression and more meditative sections.

The line-up is T. Lovmand on guitars and bass, A. Lovmand on vocals, additional guitars, synth and saranji, and C. Qvortrup on drums, lyrics and backing vocals.

Other acts using the name

One Tongues project is a solo act by Kevin of Galaga: The Movie. Another is a Chicago group formed from musicians with backgrounds in bands such as Apocalypse Hoboken, Joan of Arc, American Draft, Veterans, Mexican Cheerleader, The House That Gloria Vanderbilt, Ghosts & Vodka and others. That Chicago version releases a self-titled debut through Coach House Collective in 2008 and features Todd Paglialong on vocals, Andy Peterson on drums, Erik Bocek on bass, Sean Shipley on lead guitar and Francis Gilbert on lead guitar. A further Tongues is a hardcore band from Milan, Italy. The Seattle garage punk Tongues is also listed under the same name.
