Tommy Fleming
Tommy Fleming is an Irish singer from Aclare, County Sligo, born in 1971. He begins performing at a young age through talent competitions and concerts, and he also starts a rock band while still at school. After leaving school in 1990, he establishes himself in a Castlebar quartet called Jarog, performing in pubs, clubs and festivals around Ireland.
His wider break comes in 1993 after a performance at a charity event in Westport, County Mayo attracts the attention of producer and composer Phil Coulter. Within days, he appears with Coulter and his orchestra at the Opera House in Cork, the National Concert Hall in Dublin and the University Concert Hall in Limerick. A few months later, he tours North America, giving concerts across the United States and Canada, including performances at Boston Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Fleming later joins De Dannan as lead vocalist and stays with the group for three years before beginning his solo career. His repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary material, though it remains mainly Irish in character. He is known for a pure, powerful tenor voice and for singing with strong emotional intensity.
In 1998, Fleming is seriously injured in a car accident, including a broken neck, and later returns to performing after recovering. He receives nominations for Best Irish Male Vocalist at the Meteor Music Awards in 2000 and 2006, and he wins Best Irish Male Singer from Irish Music Magazine in 2005.
