Tom Rosenthal
Tom Rosenthal is a singer-songwriter and composer known for short pop songs with a folk-influenced style. He is an independent artist who releases music on his own label, Tinpot Records, and is associated with indie folk and singer-songwriter traditions.
Career
Rosenthal has released six albums, all self-released on Tinpot Records. His debut album, Keep a Private Room Behind the Shop, appears in 2011, and Denis Was A Bird appears in 2021 and is written about his father’s death. He also produces EPs, including the Pleasant Trees series, with Vol. 1, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, as well as Don’t Die Curious, which appears in 2018. Two of his albums are dedicated to his daughters, Bess and Fenn.
Online work and collaborations
Rosenthal makes videos for his songs and posts them on YouTube and Vimeo. His online presence includes a channel with vlogs and a large collection of songs in different formats, including music videos, lyric videos and acoustic performances. He also works with other online artists, including dodie, Savannah Brown and Will Darbyshire.
Use in film and television
His songs have been used widely in television, film and advertising. “Forgets Slowly”, “Lights on But Nobody’s Home” and “Take Care” appear in the Skins episode “Alo”. “Go Solo” appears in the German film Head Full of Honey, the documentary Kid Poker, the NFL documentary Hard Knocks, the trailer for Felix and Meira and the Netflix documentary The Least Expected Day: Inside the Movistar Team 2019. “It’s OK” appears in the trailers for Comet, Anesthesia and L’odyssée, and also features in Neighbours between 2016 and 2018. “Go Solo” also appears in a Renault Zoe E-TRON commercial and in an episode of New Amsterdam.
Edith Whiskers
Rosenthal also records as Edith Whiskers, a persona that gains attention after a 2015 cover version of “Home” goes viral on TikTok in 2020. Under that name, he releases the song as a single and on a covers album titled Stop Stealing the Covers. The Edith Whiskers character is presented as an older woman who enjoys long hot baths, beekeeping and the occasional bike ride. “Home” is certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry in 2023.
Performances and reach
Rosenthal’s first concert takes place at St Pancras Old Church on 13 March 2019. He then tours Europe and plays a show at Union Chapel, with more than 40 concerts in 2019. His songs also reach a large audience online, with over 350 million streams on Spotify.
