Tiny Stills

Tiny Stills is a Los Angeles-based alternative rock band that forms in 2013 and continues as a power pop, emo and pop punk project. The group centres on singer, songwriter and founding member Kailynn West, with a rotating line-up around her. The most recent line-up includes Harry Foster, Zach Comtois and Tony Thaxton.

Background and style

The band develops a sound shaped by power pop and rock influences, with references to Courtney Barnett, That Dog and 1990s and 2000s rock. Its work is driven by West’s writing and by a contrast between sharp guitars, direct lyrics and melodic hooks.

Releases

The first album, Falling Is Like Flying, is released in 2014. It is written as a response to the isolation and anxiety that follow a life-changing event in West’s life, and the project begins from a wish to make something that feels very different from the way she feels at the time. The release sells out in physical form, and West also sells thank-you cards with download links as last-minute merchandise.

The second album, Laughing Into the Void, follows in 2018. It is described through its lyrics, heavy honesty, crunchy guitars and catchy melodies, with songs that focus on surviving difficult periods and the sense that someone is not alone.

Live activity

In 2015, a last-minute line-up change creates an opening on a national tour with Bayside’s Anthony Raneri and A.W., and West steps in to complete the tour under the Tiny Stills name.
