This Will Destroy You

This Will Destroy You is an instrumental post-rock group from San Marcos, Texas, formed in 2005. The group forms around guitarists Chris King and Jeremy Galindo, bassist Raymond Brown and drummer Andrew Miller, who meet through mutual friends and play together in various bands during high school. Early line-ups include vocals from Galindo, but the group moves away from them after deciding the results do not suit the music, and it develops an instrumental approach after writing a song that works better without singing.

Early releases

The band self-records and self-produces Young Mountain in 2005 as a demo, selling it as a CD-R after concerts. The release receives critical attention and is named one of the year’s best instrumental releases by The Silent Ballet. Magic Bullet Records later reissues it in 2006.

Debut album and line-up changes

After recording its self-titled debut album in February 2007, the band tours with acts including 65daysofstatic. The album is released in January 2008. Around then, Raymond Brown leaves to focus on his medical career and Donovan Jones joins on bass.

EPs, singles and touring

The band releases the split EP Field Studies with labelmates Lymbyc Systym in 2009, with the tracks “Brutalism and the Worship of the Machine” and “Freedom Blade”. It appears by mail order before the official release. The group tours widely that year, including performances at the ATP festival alongside Devo and The Jesus Lizard, and at Damnation Festival with Jesu. In late 2009, Andrew Miller is replaced by Alex Bhore, drummer with The Rocketboys, because of musical differences.

Later releases and collaborations

In 2010 the band contributes “Their Celebrations” to PEACE, a compilation for Amnesty International, following a request from the charity. It also issues the two-song 12-inch EP Moving on the Edges of Things and the two-track 7-inch single Communal Blood. Communal Blood is the group’s first single and appears from live shows before its wider release. The track comes from the then-forthcoming second full-length, Tunnel Blanket, which is recorded and mastered by John Congleton and released on Monotreme Records in Europe and Suicide Squeeze Records outside Europe.
