This Or The Apocalypse
This Or The Apocalypse is a US metalcore band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, active since 2005. The group is also known as This or the Apocalypse. Ricky Armellino is listed as a member.
Style and background
The band develops from Lancaster County’s local music scene and a do-it-yourself approach, with early work built through self-released recordings and self-booked tours. Its music combines heavy, technical and melodic elements, drawing on polyrhythmic grooves, striking melodies and a style that crosses hardcore and metal. The songs are described as intelligent, direct and sometimes uplifting, with lyrical inspiration taken from vintage poetry and classic literature.
Releases and touring
This Or The Apocalypse signs to Lifeforce Records. Its first commercial album, Monuments, appears after those earlier independent releases and tours. The record is noted for its fast pace and for avoiding typical heavy-music clichés. In support of the album, the band tours widely across North America and also continues writing and recording material while on the road, using pre-production demos made during touring.
Reception and collaborators
The band gains attention through live performances, including an appearance at the 2009 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler sees one of these performances and later approaches the band about producing its next album. Adler brings producer and engineer Josh Wilbur into the project as well. The band enters the sessions with enough material for three albums, and the recording process is described as pushing the musicians beyond their earlier boundaries.
