The Yummy Fur

The Yummy Fur are a Scottish indie rock band from Glasgow, active from 1992 to 1999. They form around singer and guitarist John McKeown, who remains the only constant member across the group’s career. Their work is also described as art rock, and it sits within the late 1990s Scottish indie rock scene.

Band history

The band forms in Glasgow in 1992 and continues until it splits in 1999. After the breakup, McKeown moves through a series of short-lived groups before forming the indie rock band 1990s in 2006. Two former Yummy Fur members, Paul Thomson and Alex Kapranos, later go on to form Franz Ferdinand.

Reunion

In 2009, plans are announced for a brief reunion tour in 2010, bringing together John McKeown, Paul Thomson and Brian McDougall.

Style and significance

The Yummy Fur’s music is rooted in indie rock and art rock, and is closely associated with the time and place of its origin in Glasgow. Their reputation is tied to a small but devoted social circle, and their work is noted for its lasting sense of intrigue and connection to its Scottish setting.
