The Untouchables

The Untouchables are a ska and mod revival group from Silver Lake in the United States, active since 1981. Their sound sits within 2 tone, mod, mod revival, punk rock, R&B and reggae, and they are identified as a mid-1980s US ska and mod revival band.

History and style

The band forms in the early 1980s in Los Angeles and is associated with a crossover of soul, ska and reggae. In the mid-1980s they are best known for the minor hits I Spy (For the F.B.I.) and Free Yourself. They also appear without speaking as the “Scooter Guys” in the 1984 film Repo Man.

Members associated with the group include Chuck Askerneese, Josh Harris, Willie McNeil, Danny Moynahan, Anthony Brewster, Caine Carruthers, Will Donato, Matt Fronke, Clyde Grimes, Jerry Miller, Tim Moynahan, Glenn Symmonds, Kevin Williams and Mars Williams.

The name has also been used by several unrelated acts, including a Jamaican reggae vocal duo that records as The Untouchables and The Inspirations, a Washington, D.C. hardcore group active from 1979 to 1981, a hard rock band fronted by Adrian Smith, an early 1960s garage rock novelty band, a house music alias of Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, and a former name used by Napalm Beach.
