The Unit Ama

The Unit Ama are a UK alternative rock group active since 2002, with a sound that also sits within post-hardcore and post-rock. The band uses the standard rock trio format of guitar, bass, drums and vocals, but develops it in more fractured and expansive ways, with dense, repeating pulses and sudden changes in texture. Their music is described as natural and human in approach, rather than built around technical complication.

Releases and recordings

Alongside appearances on a number of compilations, the band issues songs through a self-released variations series, which gives several of their tracks an extended life outside the original recordings. Their work is presented as challenging rather than immediate, with a focus on tension, movement and repetition.

Members and related projects

Members of The Unit Ama have also played in Crane, Kodiak and Month of Birthdays. This links the group to a wider network of experimental and rock acts.

Live activity and associations

The Unit Ama tour with Lungfish and perform with artists including Hoover, Hot Snakes, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Erase Errata, Fugazi, Chicago Underground Duo, Lightning Bolt and Zu. They are also noted for returning to live performance after a long break.
