The Unabombers

The Unabombers are a UK group made up of Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford. They are residents and promoters of the Electric Chair, a club night they start together in 1995, and their reputation grows alongside the success of the event. The Electric Chair becomes one of Manchester’s longest running club nights, and the Unabombers gain cult status in the city through its monthly nights.

DJ style and club nights

The Unabombers’ sound centres on an open-ended approach to dance music that is described as “free style” and “northern sulphuric soul”. Their sets move across hip hop, disco, deep house and related styles, linking different forms of music through a strong funk influence. Their work is closely associated with the underground Manchester club scene.

They also take this sound to clubs and events across the UK, including The Blue Note, Heavenly Social, The 333, Plastic People, Leeds’ Hard Times, Birmingham’s Que Club, Manchester’s Hacienda, Bugged Out, Cork’s Telefunkin, Glasgow’s Wax Lyrical, Brighton’s Vibes Express, In The City, Homelands and T-In-The-Park.

Recordings

In 2001, the Unabombers release their first mix album, Basement Soul Music. It includes Electric Chair favourites such as Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, LadyCop’s “To Be Real” and Capoiera Twins’ “Four (4x3)”, and it helps bring new clubbers to their live sets. A follow-up, Saturday Night Sunday Morning, appears in 2002 and presents a deeper look at their musical style.
