The Ullulators are a Bath-based group associated with psychedelic, space rock and ambient music, and also described with dancehall, dub, reggae and rock influences. The band forms around Joie Hinton and shares members with Ozric Tentacles, reflecting a close connection to that scene in its early years.

Background

The Ullulators develop from the early Ozric Tentacles period, when Gavin Griffiths and another guitarist, Ed, are involved. Gavin Griffiths later forms The Ullulators, while also spending time with Circus Archaos. The line-up includes Joie Hinton, Generator John, Nick Van Gelder, Jane Bradfield, Kay Springer, Chambers and Andy Ull.

Recordings

The group is known for cassette releases that are described as 90-minute pieces, including Beyond The Gates Of Ull, Share A Clam and Monads of Mangonia. It also releases a vinyl album, Flaming Khaos, and appears with a track on the Feed Your Head club dog compilation.

Later activity

The Ullulators continue to play for many years after their supposed demise, including a small summer festival in the south-west each year. During this period Gavin Griffiths lives in Germany and Joie Hinton plays with Ozrics. Kay Springer later moves on to play bass for “the big man upstairs”.
