The Tyde

The Tyde are a Los Angeles indie rock band formed by Darren Rademaker after the end of the noise pop group Further in the late 1990s. Rademaker’s brother Brent becomes part of the band’s history as well: after Further splits, Brent forms Beachwood Sparks, while Darren starts the Tyde and later works through periods away from music before returning to record and perform again. The group is active from 2000 onwards and is centred on Darren and Brent Rademaker.

Style and scene

The Tyde build a sound on a blend of classic UK indie pop influence and beachy country-rock elements. They make a name for themselves on the Los Angeles scene with that combination, and the band is also described as indie pop, indie rock, folk and surf-related in style.

Early releases

The band’s first album, Once, appears in 2001 on The Track & Field Organization. By that point the lineup includes Brent Rademaker on bass and vocals, Christopher Gunst on drums, and Farmer Dave Scher on pedal steel guitar and keys, alongside Darren Rademaker. The album also includes a guest appearance from Twink of the Pink Fairies on tambourine.

Later records and collaborators

After the single “Blood Brothers” and the Go Ask Yr Dad EP in early 2013, the band returns later that year with Twice on Rough Trade. That album keeps much of the same lineup but features Ric Menck of Velvet Crush on drums, and its sound moves further towards Felt as an influence. Twice also includes guest contributions from Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden on one track and the Thrills’ singer Conor Deasy on another.

Beyond its studio albums, the band appears on Through the Wilderness: A Tribute to Madonna with an acoustic version of “Hung Up”.

Darren 4 and later activity

The group largely disappears after Three’s Co., but occasional shows continue and attempts to complete a fourth album stall repeatedly. Darren Rademaker eventually finishes Darren 4, released in 2016 on Spiritual Pajamas after four separate recording attempts in four different studios. The album includes Brent Rademaker, guitarists Ben Knight and Colby Buddelmeyer, keyboardist Bobby Rodriguez, drummer Richard Gowen and guitarist Neal Casal, with Bernard Butler of Suede contributing guitar and vocals on one track.
